Kilkenny City Vocational School provides a fully comprehensive curriculum in a learning environment that responds to the needs of each individual student regardless of ability level and aspires to an education that will prepare all students academically, vocationally, spiritually, physically and morally for the work/life ahead of them after school.

Brief History

KCVS was established in 1930. It is located in the heart of the city and is co-educational. It welcomes students from all parts of the catchment area for the Junior and Senior Cycle courses and from a much wider area for our specialised Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) courses. It serves the community through its two Centres



Kilkenny City Vocational School has 9 classrooms, Art Room, Assembly Hall, Science Laboratory, 2 Computer Rooms, 2 Woodwork Rooms, 2 Metalwork Rooms, 1 Learning Support Room, 1 Parents Room, School Library, Career Guidance Office, Counselling Room, Leaving Certificate Applied Office, and Learning Support/Junior Certificate Schools Programme.

Student Supports

The School provides a range of student supports including: Counselling, Transfer Programme, Lectures, Seminars and Workshops, Book Rental Scheme, Student Council, Breakfast Club, Lunchtime Club, Mentoring, After School Study/Homework Club. The Form Teachers and Year Heads are also available to offer help and support where required.


In KCVS there is a great atmosphere in relation to sport. This is reflected in the variety of sports on offer. We believe that sport provides a special opportunity for personal development and for valuable interaction among students. Our students participate in hurling, soccer, football, athletics and swimming. Our programme is enhanced by courses in dance, drama, life-saving, first-aid, hill walking, orienteering and self-defence with expertise being drawn from teachers within the school and qualified personnel from outside.

Junior Certificate Subjects offered are:  Irish, English, Mathematics, Italian, Science, Home Economics, Materials Technology (Wood), Religious Education, Art Craft and Design, Physical Education, Technical Graphics, Materials Technology (Metal), Geography, C.S.P.E., S.P.H.E
Junior Certificate School Programme This programme is a national programme sponsored by the Department of Education and Science.  It is an intervention for potential early school leavers.  Within the Junior Certificate cycle, it will provide students with an opportunity for success in school and reward that success with an official record of their achievements from the Department of Education and Science.  All of our KCVS Junior Cycle students participate in the J.C.S.P.
Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme The L.C.V.P. can be described as a Leaving Certificate with a strong vocational dimension.  The subjects offered are:  Irish, English, Maths, French/Italian, P.E., Career Guidance, Religion, Geography, Home Economics, Construction Studies, Art, Engineering, Biology.  There are also three link modules:- Enterprise Education, Preparation for Work, Work Experience.
Leaving Certificate Applied Programme The L.C.A. is a new approach to education and training.  Students apply their knowledge, skills and experience to practical tasks at school, in the workplace and in the wider community.
Subjects include:  English & Communication; Hotel Catering and Tourism, Graphics & Construction Studies, Social Education, Vocation Preparation and Guidance, Leisure and Recreation including Physical Education, Science (LCA), Vocational Preparation Task, Vocational Education Task, Introduction to Information and Communication Technology, Mathematical Applications, Social Education, Communicative Irish, Arts Visual, Arts Music, French, General Education Task; Personal Education Task.
Post Leaving Certificate Courses A wide range of P.L.C. courses are offered including: F.E.T.A.C. Level 5 and Higher National Diploma in Art, Craft & Design; F.E.T.A.C. Level 5 in Business Studies/Secretarial, Childcare, Community Care/Health Services, Nursing Studies and Print Journalism. Diploma in Practical Journalism.
Adult Education Programmes An extensive evening class programme is run in KCVS each year.  It includes short hobby/leisure and personal development courses as well as a series of longer certificate/diploma courses.  Classes enrol in mid-September and mid-January and in recent years classes in Interior Design, Computers, Vegetarian Cookery, Digital Photography and Upholstery have proven very popular.
